Annual Black Tie Scholar Athlete Banquet

The Memphis Chapter of the National Football Foundation holds their annual Black Tie scholar-athlete banquet the first Monday of May. This well-established chapter has also started a golf tournament in the fall to honor their award winners and both of these events are highlights in the community.

Eleven high school and two college football players in the Memphis area are recognized and given scholarships based on athletics, academics, and community service.  These athletes are recognized as being the best of the best from their respective schools. These young men are well-respected leaders in their schools and are an example to their peers. All 13 receive partial scholarships and the scholarship donors make the presentations. Additional honors recognized are the Rex Dockery Award, given to an outstanding high school coach, the Charles E. Douglas Award, given to an outstanding assistant coach, the Bill McElroy Memorial Award, given to a notable Memphis resident and the Mario Chalmers Courage Award, presented to a football player that has overcome a great physical setback. Two other awards, the Distinguished Service Award and the Contribution to Amateur Football are presented annually.
